The Author of Makola.

After reading Makola by Dr. Theresah Petrine Ennin during my time in SHS, ( Wesley Grammar School) I found myself yearning to meet this remarkable woman, hoping she could become my mentor.

By God’s Grace, my wish was granted when I enrolled at the University of Cape Coast and encountered her in one of my English classes. She affectionately dubbed me ‘My Vocal Friend’ due to my chattiness in class, later adopting my name ‘Aku Shika’.

I grew to admire her deeply and endeavored to meet her high standards. It was evident that one needed to be well-prepared before stepping into her Literature class.

Eventually, my dream of being mentored by her came true when she became my supervisor. However, the journey was far from easy; indeed, I faced many challenges.

Her constant reminder, “I am your supervisor, not your editor,” struck a chord within me. Despite the hardships, I persevered, knowing it was all for my own good. Now that I have completed my studies, we still remain in touch.

Today, I celebrate the woman who has played multiple roles in my life: my Mum, Mentor, Supervisor, and Lecturer, Dr. Theresah Petrine Ennin, now Prof. Theresah Petrine Ennin.

Congratulations on your well-deserved promotion to Professorship! May you continue to soar to even greater heights, all for the glory of God.

As for some inside references, I hope you find your own Open Water, and remember not to dwell on why All The Men In Lagos Are Mad. You are not Anowa; you are in the right season and time. And the lessons from “Gender and Writing” will always stay with me.

Congratulations once again, Prof. Theresah Petrine Ennin.
