Taking Fresh Measurements
Unforgiveness is one of the areas I battled fiercely with.
And funny enough, it was not hard to forgive an enemy; at least I have it in mind that he or she is a foe. But to forgive someone who I did not have in mind to hurt me is kind of hard.
My dad is one whom I love the most. He was literally everything since my mom was not around. After years of living outside, he came back to Accra to live with us. Maybe, just maybe, I was still expecting him to be my dad when I was 12 years old, although I am now 22 years old. Daddy came back, and everything changed.
To cut a long story short, I could not understand him, and neither could he. I thought that when he came, things would change for the better, but things changed for the worse.
I wallowed in unforgiveness for months, and I could not do anything about it. What made it hard was that I saw my dad every day, and that was not easy.
I then spoke with a trusted friend of mine about the situation, and she said to me, “…I asked a client who comes to me most of the time, “Who is your best friend?” And he said to me, The tailor is my best friend. And when I asked why, he said, “Because he always takes fresh measurements.”
Then my friend asked me, “Could you take fresh measurements? Although the tailor knows your measurements, he will take a fresh one every time you want him to sew you a new dress.
In the same way, you should always forgive. The tailor always takes fresh measurements, which helps him sew your clothes better. In the same way, forgiving always helps you free your mind from stress and toxic thoughts. This would also help you have a fresh start with my dad.”
This really helped me.
So when I have to deal with unforgiveness, I remember what my friend told me, and then I take a fresh measurement by forgiving that person. This is how I deal with unforgiveness.
